Everyone remembers Fess Parker as the Davy Crockett of Disney. I remember him as Dan'l Boone. Also the guy who really wanted to build on Cabrillo Boulevard. He eventually constructed the hotel and resort but, on a much smaller scale than he wanted to. 

Anywho, I was always in a conundrum when having to choose between watching Daniel Boone or Batman , yes the show with Adam West and Burt Ward. You see they were on at the the same time on a different bat channel. This was before any sort of home recording devices were available. If a show was on a network and you missed it, then you had to listen to the recap from a friend the next day. Not as much fun as watching it personally. Of course Summer reruns were the answer.

Tech Savvy Saturday...The VirtualBox!

As a techie, I like to play with the operating systems. The hard way would be to find a machine that the operating system can be installed on. This can be time consuming and usually ends in frustration some where along the line. Early on I was intrigued by the Virtual PC. This had many incarnations and was finally purchased by Microsoft and today it is the basis for the Hypervisor. Still, if you just want to experience a system or break some part of it by building or installing something that you really shouldn't, an expensive MS server is not an option. To fill that void, I found the VirtualBox to be the perfect virtual PC for my needs.

It works as an application on many different systems. Here it is on Ubuntu running my LAMP development stack on Xubuntu.

OpenSUSE on VirtualBox with a Win 7 host.  It works great!

My machines listed in VirtualBox. I like to try out the latest builds of Linux.

It's not only fun for Linux. Here is Windows 2000! I run some old graphics software and I have it using an old Epson printer. It's very fast! Better than the actual computer that I had this on.

Anywho, if you have the time and the space on your computer, give the VirtualBox a try.

Moleskine Madness...Recording Rights!

The vinyl LP record seems to be making a come back or maybe I'm just seeing them used more often than usual. Those vinyl records had that special smell when you slit open the shrink wrap. I know that technically it was the out gassing of the vinyl and the cardboard cover but, it was always a smell that was associated with good times. 

It would appear that some companies still manufacture devices that will play these analog data storage disks. I found these at Crosley and they look awesome. I enjoyed the retro-ranch radio.

There were record stores everywhere when I was young. Depending on how 'cool' you were is where you would hang out. Interesting socializing would take place in these various shops. Alliances would be formed, friendships started, and even the tender romance blossomed under the casually loud music that flared from the speakers on the walls.

Tech Savvy Saturday...The PM6100/AV

Just cleaning up a PowerMac 6100/AV. These are cool little machines in the "Pizza Box" format that was so popular with Apple during the late 1980's through the 1990's. The 6100 has a 601e processor which was the first of the IBM-Motorola RISC type chips that were manufactured. It is labeled as being manufactured in California, USA!

Here is a picture of the guts! All I needed to fix after all of the abuse it has probably endured, was to switch out the battery that keeps all of the settings in memory. It was in very good shape! I'm not sure what I want to do with it yet. It is the AV model which gives it the unique capability to work with video and watch cable television with it.
